A Golf Break in Ayrshire
Whether you are here to play the three courses on The Open Championship Rota, play some of the more traditional links as you explore the home of the world-famous poet Robert Burns or you are here simply to relax and enjoy the legendary west coast hospitality, a golf break in Ayrshire is an incredible experience.
Which Courses to Play
Firstly, there are the world-renowned courses which feature heavily on The Open Championship rota: Prestwick – Royal Troon – Turnberry. Prestwick is second only to The Old Course at St Andrews in the number of Open Championships it has hosted. With its many blind shots and unusual angles, it continues to offer a true test to golfers of all standards. There is also Royal Troon which played host to The Open as recently as 2016 – remember the final day battle between Henrik Stenson vs Phil Mickelson?? This striking links has a back nine to rival any in world golf. And finally, there is Turnberry which was the proud host of The Open Championship for the first time in 1977. This championship became famous for arguably the greatest battle of all time – the ‘Duel in the Sun’ between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. More recently the very same course created new memories when Tom Watson almost became the oldest ever Major champion, being pipped to The Open crown by Stewart Cink in 2009.

Don’t forget the hidden gems
Ayrshire is a location where every golfer has a great break. With almost 50 courses to pick from you really are spoiled for choice.
Leaving aside the big-name venues, there are a huge range of courses which are of an incredible standard. This includes Prestwick St Nicholas, the 26th oldest club in the world which enjoys a prime position on the shores of the Firth of Clyde. There is also the little sister at Royal Troon, namely the Portland Course. While not quite as well known or as long as the ‘big course’ this is a beautifully presented test with five par 3’s tempered with four par 5’s. And finally, there is the magnificent The Irvine Golf Club which is a classic links in every sense topped off with the romantic peaks of Arran providing a stunning backdrop to the landscape.
